The Heart Thinks: A Qur'anic Miracle Confirmed by Modern Science | Surah Al-Hajj (22:46) | Surah Al-A'raf (7:179)

For centuries, it was believed that only the brain was responsible for thinking, reasoning, and decision-making. However, the Qur'an, revealed over 1,400 years ago, presents a different perspective, attributing cognition and understanding to the heart. Modern scientific discoveries in neurocardiology now confirm that the heart has its own intelligence, influencing emotions, perception, and reasoning.

1. Qur'anic Evidence That the Heart Thinks

Surah Al-Hajj (22:46)

"Have they not traveled throughout the land so that they may have hearts with which they reason or ears with which they hear? Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts in the chests that grow blind."

This verse explicitly states that the heart is capable of reasoning (يَعْقِلُونَ بِهَا – "ya'qilūna bihā"). It also mentions that the heart can be blinded, suggesting a connection between cognition, perception, and spiritual insight.

Surah Al-A'raf (7:179) – A Stronger Evidence

"And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. They are like cattle; rather, they are even more astray. It is they who are truly heedless."

This verse provides even stronger evidence, stating that people do not use their hearts to understand (لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لَا يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا – "lahum qulūbun lā yafqahūna bihā"). This implies that understanding is not limited to the brain but is also connected to the heart.

2. Scientific Discoveries – The Heart’s Intelligence

Neurocardiology: The Brain in the Heart

Modern science has revealed that the heart has its own neural network, often referred to as the "heart brain."

🔹 40,000 neurons in the heart communicate with the brain. 🔹 The heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart. 🔹 Heart-generated signals affect perception, emotions, and decision-making. 🔹 The heart's electromagnetic field influences brain waves.

The Heart’s Role in Cognition and Decision-Making

  • Studies show that the heart processes information and helps regulate emotions.
  • Heart activity affects the brain’s ability to process information, leading to intuition and gut feelings.
  • Heart rate variability (HRV) impacts mental clarity, decision-making, and emotional stability.
  • The heart can store emotional memory, explaining why trauma and emotions affect both heart function and cognition.

These discoveries confirm that the heart plays an active role in thinking and decision-making, just as the Qur'an describes.

3. Qur'an vs. Science: A Perfect Match

The Qur'an describes the heart as an organ of reasoning and perception, which aligns with modern scientific findings:

Qur'anic Concept Scientific Discovery
The heart thinks and understands (7:179, 22:46) The heart has neurons and a nervous system that influence cognition.
The heart can be blind to truth (22:46) Emotional trauma and stress disrupt heart-brain communication, affecting perception.
Hearts can reject understanding (7:179) The heart’s signals influence emotions and logical reasoning.

These connections confirm that the Qur'anic description of the heart preceded modern scientific discoveries by over 1,400 years.

4. Conclusion: A Qur'anic Miracle Confirmed by Science

The Qur’an revealed a scientific truth long before human knowledge could verify it. While people once believed that only the brain thinks, science now confirms that the heart plays a crucial role in cognition, emotions, and decision-making.

Key Takeaways:

✅ The Qur'an states that the heart thinks, understands, and perceives. ✅ Modern science confirms that the heart has neurons, affects cognition, and influences decision-making. ✅ The Qur'an’s descriptions match scientific discoveries with incredible accuracy.
